The Legend GC
"Arnold Palmer helped introduce northern Michigan golf to the world."
Arnold Palmer · Est. 1986
About the Course
The Legend is the course that put Shanty Creek — and arguably Northern Michigan resort golf — on the national map. Arnold Palmer routed it across a tumbling hardwood-and-pine site, with multiple elevation changes, doglegs in both directions, and constant glimpses of Lake Bellaire below.
Opened in 1986 and routed by Arnold Palmer with Ed Seay, The Legend was the original championship course at Shanty Creek and remains the property's spiritual centerpiece. The actual Shanty Creek itself trickles through several holes, and Lake Bellaire serves as the backdrop for the dramatic par-3 4th.
The Legend rewards course management over raw distance. Palmer used the natural movement of the land to create blind tee shots, downhill approach shots, and small, firm greens guarded by well-placed bunkers. Pulling the right club is half the battle — many shots play one or two clubs less than the scorecard yardage suggests.
From the Blue tees that the Cup will play, the course measures roughly 6,549 yards to a par of 72. Five of the par 4s play under 400 yards, which keeps scoring opportunities in reach for golfers who can keep the ball in play off the tee.
What to Expect
Elevation Everywhere
Almost no shot is hit from a level lie. Expect uphill tee shots, downhill approaches, and yardages that play very different than the card.
Doglegs Both Ways
Palmer used the terrain to demand shaping in both directions. A stock fade and a stock draw both have a home here.
Lake Bellaire Views
The 4th tee opens out over Lake Bellaire — one of the most-photographed views in Michigan resort golf.
Small, Quick Greens
Greens are on the smaller side and protected by bunkers in the right spots. Miss in the right place, not just somewhere near the green.
Signature Hole
No. 4 — Par 3
A downhill par 3 framed by Lake Bellaire behind the green. Wind off the lake can swing club selection by two — pick a number, commit, and enjoy the view from the tee box either way.
